BECOME A SPEAKING EXAMINER

Join Our Team of Cambridge English Speaking Examiners

Become part of the Cambridge English assessment network through Kansai English Testing Centre. We're looking for experienced English language teaching professionals to help deliver internationally recognised Cambridge English Speaking tests across the Kansai region.

As a Speaking Examiner, you'll receive specialist training, develop your assessment expertise, and work alongside a community of experienced educators.

Becoming a Speaking Examiner

If you have a language teaching qualification and have relevant teaching experience, there may be opportunities for you to work with us as an examiner. This page gives you more information about what Speaking Examiners do and what is required from them, and the necessary induction and training.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Carry our speaking exams professionally, adhering to the procedures and standards outlined in the training models.
  2. Regularly check your registered email in order to respond appropriately to the requests for Speaking Examiners.
  3. Participate in annual  recertification to maintain your qualification.

Speaking Examiners will normally be assigned to exam venues within approximately 100 km of their home. Most examinations take place on weekends and may include either a morning or afternoon session, or both. While exams are scheduled throughout the year, the busiest periods are typically

summer and winter. Applicants should therefore be reasonably available to work on weekends. Examiners will not be scheduled for more than two sessions in a single day.

Requirements

  • education to first degree level or equivalent*
  • a recognised language teaching qualification*
  • proof of substantial, relevant, recent teaching experience ideally equivalent to at least 1800 hours.

*An applicant may be exempt either from the formal teaching qualification or from the first degree/equivalent requirement (but not both) if they can provide evidence of considerable relevant teaching experience (i.e. ideally 3,000 hours or more) supported by positive references.

Salary and Benefits

Fees are based on the length of the exam session(s).

  • Up to 2-hour session: ¥10,000
  • Up to 3-hour session: ¥15,000
  • Two sessions or requiring significant travel: a fixed daily rate of ¥20,000–¥30,000 per day

Travel expenses will be reimbursed. Please submit an invoice after each assignment for your examiner fees and travel expenses. Payments are subject to applicable tax withholding in accordance with Japanese law.

Please note:

Cambridge English Speaking Examiners are required to attend annual recertification. This is typically involves a half-day, in-person training session.

If more than two years have passed since an examiner last completed certification, you will be required to complete the full training programme again before undertaking examining duties.

Examiners will also be monitored during a live session shortly after training and will receive feedback from Team Leader. Speaking Examiners are expected to maintain Cambridge English quality standards. Where additional support is required, further training may be necessary before examining can continue.
